#### Instruction (20 minutes):
1. **Cardinal Directions:**
- Introduce the concept of cardinal directions (North, South, East, West).
- Use the compass rose printouts to teach each direction.
- Create a mnemonic or a rhyme to help remember the order of directions (e.g., "Never Eat Soggy Waffles").
2. **Map Elements:**

- Point out the title, compass rose, and legend/key on their maps.
- Discuss the symbols in the legend and what they represent.
#### Guided Practice (15 minutes):
1. **Classroom Map Activity:**
- Hand out the "Treasure Hunt" worksheet featuring a simple map of the classroom.
- Explain that they will follow directions to find “treasures” (e.g., stickers placed around the classroom).
- Read the first direction aloud and demonstrate finding the treasure.
2. **Small Group Work:**
- Split students into small groups.
- Allow them to take turns reading and following directions to find treasures.
- Provide guidance and support as needed.
#### Independent Practice (10 minutes):
1. **Drawing Their Own Maps:**
- Give each student a blank piece of paper and markers or crayons.
- Instruct them to draw a simple map of their classroom or their bedroom.
- Encourage them to include a title, a compass rose, and a legend with at least three symbols.
#### Conclusion (5 minutes):
1. **Share and Reflect:**
- Invite a few students to share their maps with the class.
- Ask questions about their legends and symbols.
- Recap the importance of maps and the basic elements we learned today.
#### Assessment:
- Observe participation and accuracy during the "Treasure Hunt" and small group activity.
- Check the independent practice maps for inclusion of a title, compass rose, and legend.
#### Extensions:
- **For Advanced Learners:**
- Introduce intermediate directions (NE, NW, SE, SW) and have students add these to their maps.
- **For Struggling Learners:**
- Provide a pre-labeled map template where they can fill in specific elements under guidance.
#### Reflection:
- After the lesson, reflect on what worked well and what could be improved. Note any students who may need additional support or challenges.
This lesson plan should engage Year 2 students actively in understanding basic maps and directions while providing hands-on activities to reinforce learning.
